Without trenches or manhole shafts

January 26, 2023

CTHM pursues the development of its trenchless techniques.

The Régie Autonome de Kénitra (RAK) [Kenitra independent authority] is launching rehabilitation works on collector D, T230, located under the busy Mohamed Diouri Avenue, which links Place de la Gare to Oued Sebou, (1.5km).

Project

The teams will rehabilitate this straight-lined combined sewerage system, gaining access via existing manholes:

  • On-site polymeric UV close-fit lining along a 224m-section in 500mm-diameter concrete
  • Concrete spraying along 1.2km of T230 ovoid sewers with rubble stone (a more suitable technique than the laying of liners for equivalent hydraulic capacity)
  • Pitting and levelling with mortar of 29 manholes

Optimisation and training

CTHM invested in specific equipment for the concrete spraying. 15 people will be trained for working in confined spaces and will avail of enhanced safety measures on the worksite. An operating centre will be set up to optimise worksite organisation.

Diversification

CTHM confirms its aim to diversify and develop trenchless works for visitable and non-visitable sites in busy areas of Morocco.

Works commenced in January 2023 and will last for a maximum of 8 months. Around 15km will thus be rehabilitated without any impact on the city’s main thoroughfare, which is the departure point for trains to Rabat and Tangier.

Continuous close-fit lining of the collectors consists in inserting lining which has been pre-impregnated with a polyester resin. It is laid on the existing pipeline using compressed air, and then polymerised by a train of UV lamps. This ensures the waterproofing and restructuring of the collectors from manhole to manhole. Once the lining has hardened, branch connections are recommissioned using a milling robot from the ground level.

The sprayed concrete is applied to protect and reinforce the existing structure from chemical erosion and/or structural wear and tear of the network due to operating conditions.
